TYPES OF DATABASES

Data is nothing but information; a set of data is named as database. It’s AN organised collection of data within the sort of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views and other objects.

As multi-media capabilities are getting common to computers of various sizes, the databases are also going multi-media. modern database management system permits storage and retrieval of data types like business graphs, spreadsheets, art clippings (clip arts), pictures, sound, video, etc. These new data types are termed as ‘objects’.

A database management system could be a pc software application that interacts with the user, other applications, and the database itself to capture and analyse data. A general-purpose database management system is designed to permit the definition, creation, querying, update, and administration of databases. generally a database management system is loosely referred to as a 'database'.

Types of databases

  • Centralised database
  • Operational database
  • End-user database
  • Commercial database
  • Personal database
  • Distributed database

1. Centralised database

Users from completely different locations will access this database from a remote location at the central database, that store entire data and application programs at a central computing facility for process. the application programs pick up the acceptable knowledge from the database supported the transactions sent by the communications controller for process the transaction.

Data validation and verification is carried out by the application programs at the central pc centre, and a identification number is assigned by the application programs located at the central facility. The local area workplace keeps on recording it and hardly does any process.

2. Operational database

This is additional of a basic form of data that contain information regarding the operations of AN enterprise. Generally, such databases are organised on useful lines like promoting, production, employees, etc.

3. End user database

End user is that the user of a software, application or a product. this is often a shared database which is shared by users and is supposed to be used by the top users, rather like managers at completely different levels. they'll not be troubled regarding the individual transactions as found in operational databases. This database is additional regarding the summary of the data.

4. Commercial database

This is a database that contains data that external users might need. However, they'll not be ready to afford maintaining such huge database by themselves. It’s a paid service to the user as the databases are subject specific. The access to commercial database may be given through commercial links.

Some of the database service providers also offer databases on CD-ROMs and the updated versions of the databases are created available periodically. The databases on CD-ROMs have the advantage of reduced value of communication.

5. Personal database

The personal databases are maintained, generally, on personal computers. They contain information that's
meant to be used only among a restricted variety of users, typically operating within the same department.

6. Distributed database

These databases have contributions from the common databases still because the data captured from the local operations. the data remains distributed at various sites within the organisation. because the sites are linked to every alternative with the assistance of communication links, the whole collection of data at all the sites constitutes the logical database of the organisation.
